Summer School 2018-2020

The 2018 program was held in Prague (Czech Republic) from July 16 to August 3. The school’s lecturers included:

  • Arkady Ostrovsky, head of The Economist’s Moscow Bureau 
  • Elizaveta Osetinskaya, founder of the Bell, an online publication about economics
  • Sergey Sokolov, Deputy editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta 
  • Sergey Smirnov, editor-in-chief of Mediazona 
  • Irina Borogan and Andrey Soldatov, co-founders of the site agentura.ru 
  • Dmitry Treshanin, editor of the Current Time 
  • and many others!

Vitaly Mansky’s documentary “Rodnye” and three episodes of Vladimir Mirzoev’s feature series “Etudes about freedom” were shown. The directors of the films spoke to the students after the showings. The students also visited the offices of “Radio Svoboda” and Seznam, the largest Czech Internet search engine.

The 2019 program was held in Prague from July 15 to August 2. Young journalists from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom participated. The school’s speakers included:

  • Galina Timchenko, publisher of Meduza 
  • Elizaveta Osetinskaya, founder of the Bell and host of the YouTube show “Russians Are Normal!”
  • Cultural critic and journalist Yuri Saprykin 
  • Media consultant Ilya Klishin
  • Sergei Parkhomenko, journalist and founder of the journalistic award Redkollegia
  • Documentary filmmaker Vitaly Mansky
  • And many others!

The 2020 program was held virtually due to pandemic-related restrictions. However, we still received over 700 applications to our program from Europe, the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and more former Soviet-bloc countries. Lectures were pre-recorded.  Participants had the opportunity to ask questions during live sessions and were divided into subgroups based on the format of their media project. Each subgroup had its own mentor. This approach increased personal communication. The school’s speakers included:
